The market shares of Ethernet and real time Ethernet in the German machinery industry from 2005 to 2012

Three substantial results and perspectives show the past and future development of Ethernet as real time Ethernet and as TCP/IP in the course of eight years.

Fast growth but weakened in the future

February 14th, 2011 - Ethernet was established enormously fast at the machines from already 50% in 2005 to 80% in 2010. However, this growth will weaken on high level until 2012. Then 89% of the machine-builders are to implement Ethernet at the machines.

Ethernet and TCP/IP 2005 - 2012

Ethernet, real time Ethernet and TCP/IP in the machinery industry from 2005 to 2012

Real time Ethernet as engine of the development

Real time-oriented Ethernet protocols work as engine for the strong use of Ethernet at the machines since 2008 and for the future. However, this engine did not run yet on full speed from 2005 to 2008. The machine-builders outlined some limitations that stood in the way to the practical use of real time Ethernet. That is why the use of TCP/IP still increased from 2005 to 2008.

Protocols of real time Ethernet growing differentiated

The fast growth of the real time Ethernet affected the individual protocols differently.

ProfiNet, EtherCat, Ethernet IP, Powerlink, Modbus-TCP, Sercos III, VARAN in the German machinery industry 2005 - 2012

Various real time Ethernet protocols

ProfiNet with its three variations is growing faster than the market for real time Ethernet. Thereby ProfiNet has been benefiting of the changes from Profibus.

EtherCat is growing as fast as the market keeping its portion of one quarter of the market stable.

Ethernet IP and Powerlink are growing more slowly than the market. Both together form approximately one fifth of the real time Ethernet market.

In-house solutions, Modbus-TCP, Sercos III and VARAN are growing times a little faster, times a little more slowly than the market. These protocols keep stable for special's applications at a market share of up to 5% each. These protocols constitute approximately one sixth of the market. Sporadic single denominations of other protocols are not considered.

Three market surveys as basis

This analysis of the development of Ethernet is based on three market surveys by Quest TechnoMarketing in the years 2005, 2008 and 2010:

These market surveys are specified on the website of Quest TechnoMarketing.

This article forms a cutout from the numerous, detailed results of these surveys. This article defines as market the numbers of machine-builders using Ethernet, real time Ethernet and as market shares the suitable portions of the related machine-builders.

These three market surveys are representative since their response rates cover 25% to 50%.
