Change of market shares at the world auto production favors China and disadvantages Germany

The report "The market shares of the ten largest automobile countries" covers a period of twenty-two years from 2000 to 2022. Against this background this report highlights the changes that happened in the short term from 2010 to 2022.

Update June 5th, 2023 - In the ranking of the ten largest automobile countries during the period from 2010 to 2022 five out of the ten largest automobile countries changed their position. China as production location for national and international car manufacturers can significantly expand its world market share.

The background for the change of the world market shares of the automobile countries consists of rising global auto production from 2010 to 2017 and its subsequent sharp decline from 2018 to 2020.

Index of the global auto produktion from 2000 to 2022.

The course of the index shows that the decline in production in the three years from the beginning of 2018 to the end of 2020 exceeds in duration and depth that of the global economic crisis of 2008/09.

Thus the change in the global market shares of the largest automotive countries shows the impact of this biggest production decline in 20 years on the individual automotive countries.

The US, Mexico and Thailand improving their positions...

The USA increases its global market share by 1.8 percentage points from position 3 to position 2. Mexico increases its global market share by 1.1 percentage points and improves its ranking from position 9 to position 7.

Thailand becomes part of the top 10 automotive countries for the first time in 10th place, up from 14th. Its almost unchanged world market share of 2.2% is enough to move it up into the top ten automotive countries in the face of a sharp drop in global auto production.

China is the big winner...

China is the big winner among the ten largest automotive countries. In twelve years, it has increased its share of the world market by 8.3 percentage points to 31.8%, well above average.

This means that China as a production location can benefit from both phases of world auto production - its growth and its decline.

The significant increase in the market share of the 10 largest automotive countries by 3.5 percentage points from 76.2% to 79.7% of world auto production signals a growing concentration of production. In other words: 80% of the world's car production takes place in just ten countries.
