Changes in machine automation 2022 toward Industry 4.0

At the beginning of 2022, Quest TechnoMarketing interviewed more than 150 machine builders (each with 100 or more employees) in the ten automation-relevant sectors of the German machinery industry.

June 30th 2022 - The topic: "What the machine builder wants to change in automation in 2022 in the direction of Industry 4.0".

This market survey supports automation technology manufacturers in adapting to these changes by machine builders in a timely and targeted manner. This, in turn, also benefits the machine builders themselves. The following are some of the key findings.

Almost 90% of machine builders heading in the direction of Industrie 4.0

87% of the machine builders interviewed are heading in the direction of Industry 4.0, 9% want to tackle changes to Industry 4.0 after 2022. Only 4% see no reason to implement Industry 4.0.

This means that acceptance of Industry 4.0 among machine builders has increased by 21 percentage points since 2016, from 66% to 87%.

The ranking of machine-related changes in the direction of Industry 4.0

The first three changes in the direction of Industry 4.0 comprise with 50% half of the machine builders. These are:

  • Networking of machines

  • Condition monitoring

  • Operation of the machine.

Compared to 2016, more than half of the machine builders interviewed are working on the same four machine-related changes, namely networking, operation, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.

The percentage of machine builders working on these four changes increased from 55% (2016) to 63% (2022).

The ranking of cross-machine changes in the direction of Industry 4.0

Storage of data by clouds (28% of machine builders willing to change) and virtual creation/simulation of machines (26%) are the main activity areas of machine builders willing to change.

The ranking of changes in the sectors in 2022

This chart highlights the development stages of machine-related changes to Industry 4.0 in the ten sectors  for 2022.

The sectors are sorted in descending order along the overarching realization of Industry 4.0, the realization of Industry 4.0 in subsectors, and finally along the isolated realization of Industry 4.0.
