11 years of Ethernet and real time Ethernet in machinery industry
The market shares of Ethernet and real time Ethernet protocols in the German machinery industry from 2005 to 2015
The market penetration of Etherent and real time Ethernet in the German machinery industry is tracked by four representative market surveys from Quest TechnoMarketing in the years 2005 to 2012.
Increasing market shares of Ethernet and real time Ethernet
Update October 13th, 2014 - The diagram proves the increasing market shares of Ethernet and in particular of real time Ethernet among the machine-builders. Their plannings point out that 83% of the machine-builders will use real time Ethernet until 2015.
The market shares of the real time Ethernet protocols
The following diagram shows, to which extent those machine-builders having real time Ethernet at the machines use the respective protocols as main protocol. Main protocol indicates the protocol that is used at most machines with real time Ethernet.
ProfiNet with its three versions is used by 42% of the machine-builders with real time Ethernet. EtherCat is next ProfiNet the most common real time protocol used as main protocol by 21% of the machine-builders with real time Ethernet. Powerlink follows third with 15%.
Until 2015 the use of real time Ethernet is to expand from 71% to 83% among the machine-builders. This dynamic growth mainly favors ProfiNet increasing its share from 42% to 47%. EtherCat and Powerlink are almost to grow as fast as the market for real time Ethernet.
Ethernet IP, in-house solutions, Modbus TCP, Sercos III, TCP resp. UDP with PTP or Varan showing 22% market share
The other five real time Ethernet protocols Ethernet IP, in-house solution/others, Modbus TCP, Sercos III and VARAN are showing a market share of 18% with the machine-builder using real time Ethernet for special applications in 2012.
TCP resp. UDP with PTP (Precision Time Protocol according to IEEE1588 V2) was recorded for the first time in 2012 and implemented by 3% of the machine-builders with real time Ethernet (not included in the diagram).
