Product segments of the sector packaging machines 2020

Average value of packaging machines holds up well with falling units and sales

This report tracks the development of the average value of packaging machines from 2008 to 2020. In 2020, the average value held up relatively well with falling production numbers and sales. In order to make different developments quickly visible, the pre-crisis year 2008 is set equal to 100 in each case.

November 23rd, 2021 - A separate report examines the development of production and sales of packaging machines up to 2020.

The average value of packaging machines (blue area in the diagram) fluctuates more than production and sales in the industry, as it is a resultant of these two variables.

After the onset of the economic crisis in 2009/2009, the average value drops by 14% to €67,000 by 2011, then rises by 34% to over €89,000 by 2014, and drops again by 15% to €76,000 by 2016. These changes are accompanied by a change in export markets, as a separate report points out.

From this low, the value per packaging machine rises again by 15% to €88,000 by 2019. This is the second highest average value since 2008.

Production and sales per packaging machine from 2008 to 2020.

In 2020, the average value of packaging machines fell from €88,000 to €85,600, or by 2.7%. This is significantly lower than production (-4.3%) and sales (-6.9%) decrease from 2019 to 2020.

The changes in the average value of packaging machines do not show uniformity in the three product segments of the industry.

These three product segments are filling and sealing machines, cartoners, case packers, etc., and cleaning machines.  The following diagram shows the shares of these product segments in the entire industry in terms of number of machines and value of machines.

The shares of the product segments such as cleaning machines, fill and sealing machines and case packing at the sector 2020.

Filling and sealing machines characterize the packaging machinery industry with a share of almost 80% of all packaging machines produced and a share of more than two thirds in the value1 of all packaging machines produced.

Cartoners, case packing systems, i.e. repackers in general, comprise just under one fifth of the industry's machine production, cleaning machines for the beverage industry and other packaging materials show only a small share of two percent of the industry's production.

Value per cleaning machine, fill machine and cartoner from 2008 to 2020.

The average value of filling and sealing machines fell by just under 4% from €77,500 to €74,500 from 2019 to 2020, while that of cartoners and case packing systems rose by just under 6% from €120,966 to €127,941.

The average value of cleaning machines is on a downward trend within its ups and downs.

1 Official production statistics refer to value and define this as production valued at selling prices excluding value added tax. The difference to sales is mainly due to changes in inventories and can therefore be regarded as sales to a large extent.
